Earth · Rammed-Earth Courtyard
A standalone courtyard enclosed by century-old rammed-earth walls — where the breath of soil meets the grain of timber.
The Earth Courtyard is Shenguantun's oldest dwelling, framed by century-old rammed-earth walls that preserve the raw texture of Yi traditional architecture. The thick earthen walls stay cool in summer and warm in winter — no air conditioning needed. A stone mill rests in the courtyard beneath old pear trees; dried corn and chili hang from the eaves. Inside, exposed timber beams span overhead while sunlight filters through wooden lattice windows, casting dappled shadows on the earthen floor. This is the element of Earth — the weight and embrace of the ground itself.
