Qujing: Summer Healing at the Source of the Pearl River

Wellness8 min2024-07-20

Year-round 15°C coolness, the pure source of the Pearl River — in Yunnan's largest basin, rediscover your body's natural rhythm.

Qujing's summer is a poem that needs no air conditioning.

This city at the source of the Pearl River averages just 15°C year-round. In the sweltering July heatwave, Qujing locals still sleep under light blankets.

I spent three days at the Pearl River Source scenic area. No crowds — just dense primeval forest and underground rivers bursting from limestone. Standing at the source outlet, watching crystal-clear groundwater surge from rock crevices, you feel it is not water flowing out but the mountain itself breathing.

What moved me most was the Luliang Colored Sand Forest. Millennia of geology have dyed the sands ochre red, golden yellow, slate gray — an oil painting of the earth from afar. Here, time is measured on a geological scale, and human anxieties shrink into insignificance.

Qujing's healing is the purity of source water, the nourishment of selenium-rich soil, the stillness of thousand-year sand forests.
