The Tea Horse Road: Last Memories of the Caravans

Heritage12 min2024-10-15

Following thousand-year-old hoof prints into the Hengduan Mountains, in search of vanishing caravan culture.

Deep within the folds of the Hengduan Mountains lies a stone-paved path polished smooth by centuries. This is the Tea Horse Road — a trade corridor carved through cliffs by hooves and human shoulders.

For over a thousand years, horse caravans carried Pu'er tea, salt, and cloth across the gorges of the Jinsha River, over the snow-capped passes of Meili Snow Mountain, all the way west to the Himalayan bazaars.

In the ancient town of Shaxi, we found the last remaining caravan leader — Grandpa Apu. At 82, he still recalls every route, every water source, every tea grade. "The most important thing in a caravan was not the goods," he says, "but trust — trust in your partners, reverence for nature, and commitment to your word."

Walking this ancient path, you understand: some roads are measured not in distance, but in time.
